Dog Puzzle Toys (2026): Difficulty Levels, Supervision and What They're For

For a dog that needs more to do than walks, a food puzzle turns part of its daily food into a problem to solve. Buy by difficulty: a Level 1 toy such as the TRIXIE Rod Board for a beginner, a Level 2 Nina Ottosson Dog Brick or Dog Tornado next, and the Level 3 or 4 puzzles only for a dog that has cleared the easier ones. This page explains what the ASPCA says puzzles are for, how Outward Hound grades its levels, and which toys need you in the room.

Capacities are from each listing. The Hide-A-Squirrel and the snuffle mat are not on any maker's level scale; the mat is about as simple as a food game gets, and the squirrel toy is a toy, not a feeder.

What a puzzle toy is for

The ASPCA's guide to destructive chewing names boredom as one cause: "Bored dogs tend look for ways to entertain themselves, and chewing is one option." Its fix is to give the dog "plenty of ways for your dog to exercise his mind and body," and it lists "feeding meals in food puzzle toys" among them, next to daily walks, fetch, tug, training classes and dog sports. It also suggests you "identify times of the day when your dog is most likely to chew and give him a puzzle toy filled with something delicious."

The ASPCA's separation anxiety guide gives puzzles a second job. For mild cases, it suggests offering a puzzle toy stuffed with food "that will take him at least 20 to 30 minutes to finish" each time you leave, and says "puzzle toys and chew items encourage chewing and licking, which have been shown to have a calming effect on dogs." It pairs that with "at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity" a day. A puzzle adds to exercise; it does not replace a walk.

Serious separation anxiety or destruction that does not ease with more to do is a behavior problem, not a toy problem. Ask your vet, who can refer you to a behavior specialist (more on that).

You will see one claim on nearly every listing here: "15 minutes of brain-engaging play equals 30 minutes of physical activity." That line is Outward Hound's and TRIXIE's marketing. We did not find it in any veterinary or ASPCA source, so treat it as the makers' claim.

Outward Hound's four levels, in its own words

Outward Hound sells the Nina Ottosson line and sorts it into four levels on its Nina Ottosson pages. TRIXIE uses a similar scale on its listings.

• Level 1 puzzles "are best suited to dogs that are naturally curious and love sniffing for treats, as well as dogs that are new to nose work or to dog puzzle toys. Think of these games as having 'one-step' solutions" (Level 1).
• Level 2 puzzles "are for pups who are ready for new play patterns with multiple steps. They can involve picking up covers, lifting flaps, paw pressing on levers, and tipping or sliding actions" (Level 2).
• Level 3 puzzles "really test your dog's problem-solving skills by requiring multiple play actions in order to reveal the rewards inside," for dogs that have mastered levels 1 and 2 (Level 3).
• Level 4 puzzles "are for dog geniuses who have already mastered levels 1-3" (Level 4).

The order matters more than the label. A dog handed a Level 3 slider on day one may paw at it, fail, and give up, or flip it over. Start easy, let the dog win quickly, and move up once it solves a puzzle without help. Most of these toys can also be made easier by leaving out parts: the Dog Brick listing says its tips card explains how to adjust the difficulty. Which puzzle for which dog

• Never done a puzzle: the TRIXIE Rod Board, Level 1. The dog noses rods apart to reach the treats underneath. The Dog Smart, Outward Hound's own Level 1 board, was listed as low in stock when we checked.
• Ready for more than one step: the Dog Brick, which mixes three motions and holds 3/4 cup. The Dog Tornado adds spinning layers and holds 1/2 cup.
• Solves Level 2 in a minute: the Challenge Slider (Level 3) holds 1 cup and takes spreads or wet food as well as kibble.
• Has beaten everything: the MultiPuzzle (Level 4) combines tiles, a wheel and sliders.
• A nose-first dog, or one that needs slower meals: the Golden Pup snuffle mat. Scatter kibble into the fleece and let the dog sniff it out.
• Loves to dig out and carry toys: the Hide-A-Squirrel. There is no food, so it works between meals.

The Nina Ottosson Dog Casino was out of stock on Amazon when we checked.

Stay in the room: supervision and small parts

Outward Hound and TRIXIE say the same thing. The Hide-A-Squirrel listing: "No toy is indestructible. Do not leave toys with unsupervised pets. Remove and replace if damaged." TRIXIE's listings: "Please remember never to leave toys with unsupervised pets - no toy is indestructible."

Puzzle toys are not chew toys. The Dog Brick has loose bones and the Dog Tornado has lift-out pieces, and a dog that gives up on the puzzle may start chewing the parts instead. The ASPCA's advice for chewers is to supervise "during all waking hours" until the chewing is under control, and to confine the dog with "a variety of appropriate toys and chew things" when you cannot watch.

A few habits keep puzzle time safe:

• Put the puzzle down when you can watch, and pick it up when the food is gone.
• Check plush toys and fleece mats after each session, and throw out torn ones. The Hide-A-Squirrel listing says to remove and replace a damaged toy.
• Wash the mat and the puzzle trays; the TRIXIE board is dishwasher safe and the snuffle mat is machine washable, per their listings.

Key point: a puzzle is a game you run, not a babysitter. Leave the dog alone with a sturdy chew, not with a board of small parts.

Puppies and older dogs
