Sherpa vs SturdiBag Pet Carriers (2026): Sizes Against Airline Under-Seat Limits

If you want a carrier that sits inside the under-seat sizes the big US airlines publish, buy the Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium; if your cat or small dog needs more room and a higher weight limit, the SturdiBag Pro 3.0 gives you that, but only by counting on its soft top to compress. Both are soft-sided carriers with a flexible frame, and neither maker's "airline" wording is an airline's approval: each airline publishes a size and the gate agent judges whether your carrier fits under the seat.

How we chose: we did not test these carriers; we compared their listed dimensions and each maker's own pages with the airline limits we loaded on September 28, 2026, and both brands were sold by Amazon.com or the maker's own store and in stock that day.

What six airlines allow under the seat

These are the soft-carrier limits each airline states on its own pet page, in inches, from the table in our carrier size guide, checked September 28, 2026. They change, so check yours before you book.

A "No" means at least one listed dimension is over the airline's number before any compression. On paper, the Sherpa Medium clears American, Delta and United; the SturdiBags clear none of the six.

A few airline rules matter as much as the size. American wants mesh ventilation on three or more sides and says soft carriers "can be slightly larger but still need to fit under the seat without having to excessively collapse the kennel." Delta says the maximum "is determined by the aircraft dimensions of your flight." United says that on some planes you must sit in a window or aisle seat for the carrier to fit.

How each one fits under a seat

Both makers design around the gap between the carrier's listed size and the space under a seat.

Sherpa uses a frame. Its listing says the "patented spring wire frame allows the rear end of the carrier to be pushed down several inches to easily fit under airplane seats." The front keeps its height and the back gives.

SturdiBag uses a soft top. Its FAQ says its "patented flex-height design allows the carrier to adjust in height, making it easier to fit under most airline seats, even when dimensions vary between aircraft." The same FAQ says "the Large Cube and Medium SturdiBags meet all major airline specifications" and "the Small and Large SturdiBags meet most airline requirements." That is SturdiBag's claim. On the published numbers above, the Medium is over in width and height on every airline except JetBlue's width, and the Large is half an inch over the common 18 x 11 x 11 in size.

SturdiBag, to its credit, adds that "Airline size requirements may differ" and that you should check your airline's guidelines. It also says its Extra Extra Large "is not airline compliant," which is why we compare only the Medium and Large.

Key point: a carrier that fits because it compresses leaves less headroom for the pet inside. American's warning about "excessively" collapsing the kennel is the one to take seriously. Measure your pet lying down and standing before you pick a size.

Weight limits and your pet's size

The weight ratings differ more than the dimensions do:

• Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium: "fits pets up to 16 pounds," per the listing. Sherpa says to choose "based on your pet's measurements, followed by their weight," and to "allow enough space for your pet to change positions inside the carrier."
• SturdiBag Pro 3.0 Medium: 25 lb, per SturdiBag's size chart.
• SturdiBag Pro 3.0 Large: 30 lb, per SturdiBag's size chart.

Those are the makers' ratings for the carrier, not airline limits. Most of the airline pages we loaded cap the carrier by size rather than weight, though American says pet plus carrier must not exceed 20 lb on its three-cabin A321T. Whatever the carrier is rated for, your pet still has to fit under the seat inside it.

Ventilation, openings and car use

Ventilation. Sherpa lists "mesh panels for ventilation." SturdiBag's FAQ says its carriers have "multiple mesh windows/panels along with breathable sides and openings," with "adjustable airflow levels," and its listing describes a top mesh opening that rolls up and fastens with Velcro. Check that whichever you buy leaves mesh on three sides once it is under the seat, which is American's rule.

Openings. The Sherpa has top and side entries with "escape-proof locking zippers," per its listing. The SturdiBag Pro 3.0 has openings on both sides and a larger top opening, per its listing. Two side doors help if the seat in front blocks one end.

In the car. Sherpa's luggage strap "doubles as a seatbelt security pass-through," and SturdiBag lists safety clips and seatbelt straps. Those keep the carrier in place; neither carrier is on the Center for Pet Safety certified list, so neither is crash protection. Washing and warranty

The two makers take different approaches to cleaning:

• Sherpa includes "a removable machine washable cozy base liner" and a "waterproof interior base," per its listing. You wash the liner and wipe the base.
• SturdiBag says the whole carrier can go in the machine. Its FAQ says to vacuum first, remove the zipper clips, shoulder strap, fleece pad, baseboard and rods, turn it inside out, wash on a gentle cycle in cold or warm water, and air dry. Reinsert the arch rods first afterward.

SturdiBag says its products bought directly from the manufacturer carry a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. The Amazon listings here are sold by Sturdi Products itself; keep your order record. We did not find Sherpa's warranty terms on its product page.

Which one to buy

• For the fewest surprises at the gate on American, Delta or United: the Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium, with a pet up to 16 lb that can turn around inside it.
• For a larger cat or small dog, up to 25 or 30 lb: a SturdiBag Pro 3.0, if you fly an airline that accepts soft carriers that compress, and you are ready for a gate agent to check it.
