Winter Dog Coats (2026): Which Dogs Need One and How to Measure

A dog with a short coat, a small or thin body, short legs, or a lot of years on it is the dog that needs a winter coat, and the AVMA and ASPCA both say so. For most of those dogs, buy the Ruffwear Vert if you walk in snow and wet, the Kurgo Loft for cool damp days, or a Gooby fleece for a small dog that just needs a layer. With winter a couple of months off, now is a good time to measure: every coat here is sized by chest girth.

How we chose: we did not test these coats; we read the AVMA and ASPCA cold-weather pages and the makers' size charts, and kept only coats sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 28, 2026.

Each listing is one size; choose your dog's size on the Amazon page after you measure. The Vert's girth range comes from Ruffwear's Vert page, which now calls it the Vert Waterproof Insulated Vest.

Which dogs need a coat

Not every dog does. The American Veterinary Medical Association's cold weather safety page says a pet's cold tolerance "can vary from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health." It then names the dogs that feel it first:

• Short coats. "Short-haired pets feel the cold faster because they have less protection."
• Short legs. Short-legged pets "may become cold faster because their bellies and bodies are more likely to come into contact with snow-covered ground."
• Very young, very old and ill dogs. The AVMA says pets with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or hormonal imbalances such as Cushing's disease may have a harder time regulating body temperature, and "the same goes for very young and very old pets."
• Thin dogs. In its section on cars, the AVMA says pets that are "young, old, ill, or thin are particularly susceptible to cold environments."

Its advice on clothing is direct: "If your dog has a short coat or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or dog coat." Long-haired and thick-coated dogs such as huskies tolerate cold better, the AVMA says, but no pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather, and it still suggests shorter walks in very cold weather.

The ASPCA's cold weather tips describe what the coat should cover: for a short-haired dog, "a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly."

If you are not sure where your dog's limit is, the AVMA's advice is to ask your veterinarian (more on our approach). Its signs of hypothermia are whining, shivering, seeming anxious, slowing down or stopping, weakness, and looking for warm places to burrow; if you see them, get the dog inside.

How to measure your dog for a coat

Three numbers cover every chart on this page. Use a soft tape and measure with the dog standing.

1. Chest girth. Around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. Ruffwear sizes the Vert by this number alone, from XXS (13 to 17 in) to XL (36 to 42 in). Canada Pooch's size guide says to measure "around the largest part of your dog's chest, just behind their forelimbs," and adds that chest girth "is even more important than back length."
2. Back length. From the base of the neck to the base of the tail, per Canada Pooch. It matters most on long-bodied dogs, where a coat sized by girth alone can stop short of the hips.
3. Neck. Gooby's listing suggests choosing a neck opening bigger than your dog's head, since its vest goes on over the head before it zips.

Between sizes, follow the maker. Ruffwear's Powder Hound chart says to size up for a relaxed fit or down for a snug one. Canada Pooch says that when in doubt, "opt for the size up." Once the coat is on, check that the dog can walk, sit and squat to go to the bathroom without the coat pulling, and that the belly panel covers the chest without rubbing the armpits.

Harness openings: coat over harness or harness over coat

A coat and a harness compete for the same space. There are two ways to handle it.

Coat over the harness. The Ruffwear Vert has a back leash portal, and the listing says it goes over most harnesses, so the leash clips to the harness through the coat. The Kurgo Loft uses a two-way zipper for harness access instead. This is the setup to use with a no-pull harness, though a front clip on the chest may sit under the coat's belly panel; check that you can reach it.

Harness over the coat. A thin fleece or sweater can go under the harness, as long as you refit the harness straps over the extra layer. A harness that fit snugly on bare fur can be too tight over fleece, or too loose once the fleece compresses.

The Gooby vest has its own D-ring for short walks, but Gooby says it is not recommended if your dog pulls. For a dog that pulls, put a harness on as well.

Reflective trim and staying visible

Winter walks happen in the dark for a lot of owners. The Ruffwear Vert, Ruffwear Powder Hound and Kurgo Loft all have reflective trim, per their listings, and both Ruffwear coats have a loop for a clip-on light. If your dog wears a coat that covers its collar, move the ID tag somewhere it can still be seen, or rely on a microchip as backup; the AVMA says pets get lost more often in winter because snow and ice hide familiar scents. Washing, drying and why you want two

The AVMA says to "have several on hand, so you can use a dry sweater or coat each time your dog goes outside," because "wet sweaters or coats can actually make your dog colder." That is the case for owning two coats, or a coat and a fleece.

Care differs by material:

• Ruffwear says to wash the Vert and Powder Hound in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and let them air dry; no bleach, ironing or dry cleaning.
• Gooby says its fleece vest is machine washable and can go in the dryer.
• Kurgo and Canada Pooch do not give wash instructions on these listings; check the care label.

Salt and de-icer residue on a coat's belly panel is another reason to wash often. The AVMA says a dog's feet, legs and belly can pick up de-icers, antifreeze and other chemicals on walks, and to wipe them off when you get home. Our guide to dog boots and paw wax covers the feet.

Picking one of the five

Buy the Ruffwear Vert if your dog has a short coat and you walk in snow, sleet or rain. It is the only coat here with a waterproof shell, insulation and a leash portal for a harness.

Buy the Ruffwear Powder Hound for an active dog in cold, dry snow. The sleeves and close cut keep it from twisting when the dog runs, but the listing does not mention a leash portal.

Buy the Kurgo Loft for cool, damp days, a dog that already wears a harness, or a lower budget. It is lighter than the Ruffwear coats and reversible.

Buy the Canada Pooch snowsuit for a very small, short-legged dog whose belly and legs are in the snow on every walk. This listing is Size 8, which Canada Pooch recommends for a small Chihuahua.

Buy the Gooby fleece as a small dog's everyday layer or a spare. It washes in a machine and goes on in seconds, but it is not waterproof.

Coats we left out

Hurtta, maker of the Expedition Parka and Extreme Warmer, was sold on Amazon only by a third-party store called Truemark when we checked, not by Amazon.com or Hurtta itself. Ruffwear's Quinzee did not turn up in Ruffwear's Amazon storefront in our search. Some colors of the Kurgo Loft are sold by other third-party stores; the listing above is the one sold by Amazon.com.

None of these brands appears on our pet product recall page, which tracks FDA and CPSC pet recalls, as of September 28, 2026, and we found no CPSC recall of these coats in the CPSC recall database.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my dog need a coat in winter?

If it has a short coat, is small, short-legged, thin, very young or elderly, probably yes. The AVMA says short-haired and short-legged pets get cold faster and suggests a sweater or coat for a dog with a short coat or one that seems bothered by the cold.

How should a dog coat fit?

It should cover the back from neck to base of tail and the chest and belly, per the ASPCA, without pulling when the dog sits or squats. Ruffwear sizes its coats by chest girth measured around the widest part of the rib cage.

Can a dog wear a coat and a harness together?

Yes. Choose a coat with a leash portal (Ruffwear Vert) or a harness zipper (Kurgo Loft), or put a thin fleece under the harness and refit the straps over it.

Is a wet coat worse than no coat?

It can be. The AVMA says wet sweaters or coats can make a dog colder and suggests keeping several so you can use a dry one every time.

Should my dog wear a coat indoors?

The AVMA's guidance is about time outside. Indoors, it suggests giving pets a choice of warmer and cooler sleeping spots instead.
