Cat Beds, Window Perches and Heated Pads (2026)

For a cat, three kinds of resting spot cover most needs: a window perch to watch from, a warm bed, and somewhere enclosed to hide. For glass doors and big panes, the K&H EZ Mount Kitty Sill; for windows with a proper sill, the sill-mounted K&H Kitty Sill; for warmth, the K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed or Mat. The details that matter are the ones people skip: the window a suction cup can hold on, the weight limit, and the heater's wattage and warnings.

How we chose: we did not test these; weight limits, window sizes and heater specs come from each maker's listing or site, and every pick was sold by Amazon.com or the brand and in stock on September 28, 2026.

What feline vets say a cat needs to rest

The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA, formerly the AAFP) and International Cat Care publish a client guide, Your Cat's Environmental Needs, based on the AAFP/ISFM Environmental Needs Guidelines. Its first point is to provide a safe place:

• "Every cat needs a safe and secure place where they can retreat to, so they feel protected, or which can be used as a resting area."
• "Most cats prefer that the safe space is big enough to fit only themselves, has sides around it, and is raised off the ground."
• The cat "should have the ability to exit and enter the space from at least two sides if they feel threatened."
• Good examples are "a cardboard box, a cat carrier, and a raised cat perch," and "there should be at least as many safe places, sized to hold a single cat, as there are cats in a household," set away from each other.

The same guide lists "resting or sleeping areas" among the key resources, with food, water, litter, scratching and play areas, and says to keep them separated so cats can reach them without being challenged by another cat. It also says a cat may not show obvious signs of stress, pain or sickness, and that a behavior change is a reason to see your vet. That is also our advice for anything medical here (why).

Read against that list, no single product does it all. A window perch is raised but open. A cave has sides but one way in. A donut bed has sides but sits on the floor. In a multi-cat home, plan one resting spot per cat, in different rooms or at different heights.

Suction-cup window perches: weight limits and window types

A suction-cup perch is only as good as the glass under it. K&H says its EZ Mount cups hold "in excess of 50 lbs," but its own product pages set conditions:

• Smooth, unobstructed glass. The EZ Mount Hammock "requires an unobstructed, smooth glass surface measuring 29.5"L X 14"W X 9.5"H or larger" and is "not recommended for textured, louvered, or windows with divided panes," per K&H.
• Glass size. For the EZ Mount Kitty Sill, K&H's FAQ gives a minimum window of 24 in wide by 19 in high; the Amazon listing title says it fits 27 x 23 in glass spaces. Measure your pane against the larger figure if you want margin.
• Interior glass. K&H says the Kitty Sill mounts to "interior glass patio doors and windows."
• Maintenance. K&H says to "clean the suction cups and window surface once a month" for the best hold.

Grid inserts, frosted glass and panes smaller than those sizes rule a suction-cup perch out. For those windows, the sill-mounted K&H Kitty Sill sits on the ledge instead: K&H says it needs a sill 24 in long and 2 in deep, installs with adhesive strips or screws, and supports up to 40 lb.

Heated cat beds and pads: wattage, thermostats and cords

K&H's indoor Thermo-Kitty line is low wattage: 4 watts in the Thermo-Kitty Bed and 6 watts in the Mat. K&H's Thermo-Kitty Bed page says the surface stays about 15°F above room temperature when empty and warms "to about 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs and cats" when the cat lies on it. That is why an empty bed may not feel warm to your hand.

On safety, K&H's FAQ says the items are "MET listed by UL 499 standards" (MET Labs is the certifier) and that MET requires a "Do not use with extension cord" label. The listing calls them "safety listed"; we are reporting K&H's statement, not a listing we looked up. K&H also says:

• "Consult your veterinarian before use with young puppies/kittens, convalescent pets, during surgery/surgery recovery, or any animal that cannot voluntarily remove themselves from the heated pad."
• "Do not place pad in confined area where the pet does not have the ability to remove themselves from the pad."
• The bed has no on/off switch and is designed to stay plugged in, though MET suggests unplugging it for an extended vacation.

Cords. K&H's indoor Thermo-Kitty pages do not describe the cord as chew-resistant; the cord is 5.5 ft. K&H's outdoor Lectro-Soft heated bed is the one that lists a "5½ foot steel wrapped cord," at 20 to 60 watts depending on size. If your cat or a dog in the house chews cords, route the indoor cord out of reach or look at the Lectro-Soft.

Pro tip: put the Thermo-Kitty Mat on a perch or bed the cat already uses. K&H says it works alone or on top of another bed, which saves you guessing at a new bed the cat may ignore.

Enclosed or open: caves, donuts and hammocks

• Enclosed caves give a cat sides and a roof. The MEOWFIA cave is felted merino wool, sized by weight (Medium up to 10 lb, Large up to 20 lb), and MEOWFIA suggests the larger size for a cat between sizes. It has a single opening, so it does not meet the feline vets' point about exits on two sides; a cat that likes it will tell you.
• Open donut beds like the Best Friends by Sheri Small have a stuffed rim on all sides and a 17 in flat center, per the listing. They sit on the floor, so put one on a chair, shelf or cat tree platform if your cat prefers height.
• Perches and hammocks give height and a view but no sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are suction-cup cat window perches safe?

They hold when the glass suits them. K&H rates its EZ Mount cups to 50 lb but says they need smooth, clean glass of a minimum size, not textured or divided panes, and that the cups should be cleaned monthly. For other windows, a sill-mounted perch avoids the issue.

Are heated cat beds safe to leave plugged in?

K&H says its Thermo-Kitty beds are designed for 24/7 use and are MET listed to UL 499, with no on/off switch. It says not to use an extension cord, to unplug for long trips, and to ask your vet before using one with kittens or a recovering cat.

Do cats prefer enclosed or open beds?

The feline vets' guide says most cats prefer a space that fits only them, has sides and is raised off the ground, with a way out on two sides. Individual cats vary, so offer more than one type.

How many cat beds do I need?

At least one safe resting place per cat, set away from the others, per the Feline Veterinary Medical Association and International Cat Care guide.
