Cat Carriers for Vet Visits (2026): Top-Loading, Removable Tops and Getting a Cat Inside

The best cat carrier for vet visits has a top door as well as a front door, and ideally a top half that comes off, so you can lower the cat in and the vet can examine it without pulling it out. That is the advice of Cat Friendly Homes, the cat owner site of the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (formerly the American Association of Feline Practitioners). Our picks: the Petmate Two Door Top Load Kennel for most cats, the Amazon Basics 2-Door Top-Load for a big cat, and the Petmate Top Load for a small one. The carrier is only half of it; the other half is getting your cat to treat it as furniture.

How we chose: we did not test these carriers; we compared the makers' listings with Cat Friendly Homes' carrier guidance and kept carriers sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 28, 2026.

What cat vets say to look for

The Cat Friendly Homes page on choosing a cat carrier lists what matters:

• A top and a front opening. It says to "look for one with both a top and front opening or a very large round opening," so you can place your cat in and take her out even if she is not trained to the carrier.
• A top half that comes off. "It's helpful to have a carrier that can be taken apart in the middle and have the top half removed. This way your cat can remain in the bottom of the carrier during a check-up." The page adds that many cats feel more secure and less anxious when they stay in the carrier for the exam.
• Easy to clean, with a leak-proof bottom and room for an absorbent towel.
• Some privacy with good ventilation. A towel over the carrier works.
• Looks you can live with, because the carrier should stay out in your home.

Pet sizes and doors are from each listing or the maker's page. Petmate's own Two Door Top Load page gives the 5 to 15 lb range; the Amazon listing says up to 15 lb.

Which carrier for which cat

Most adult cats: Petmate Two Door Top Load, 24 in. It has the two doors Cat Friendly Homes asks for. A cat that has learned to walk in can use the front; a cat that has not can be lowered through the top. Petmate's page lists an interior of 21 x 14.5 x 13.5 in for this size.

A big cat, or one you want out of the top half at the vet: Amazon Basics 2-Door Top-Load. At 22.8 x 15 x 13 in it is the roomiest two-door hard carrier here, and its listing says screws keep the top and bottom sections connected, so the top can come off. Undoing screws in an exam room takes a minute, so try it at home first.

A small cat that has to be lowered in: Petmate Top Load, 19 in. Petmate calls its top-load design "veterinarian-recommended" and says the top door is twice the size of a front-entry door. It has no front door at all.

A cat that walks in on its own: SportPet X-Large. Its wide side door is built for walking in, and it folds flat between trips. With no top door, it does not help with a cat that refuses.

A cat that also flies: Sherpa Original Deluxe, Large. A soft carrier with top and side openings, sized for under-seat use. Airline limits vary by airline and aircraft; our airline pet carrier guide lists them, and Sherpa vs SturdiBag compares those two soft carriers.

Make the carrier part of the furniture

Most cats hate the carrier because it only appears before a car ride. Cat Friendly Homes' page on getting your cat to the veterinarian says to make it "a part of your home environment" instead:

• Keep it out in a room where your cat spends a lot of time, with familiar soft bedding inside. Bedding or clothing with your scent can help.
• Put treats, catnip or toys inside to encourage your cat to go in. The page notes that you will often first see treats gone overnight.
• Don't coax your cat in while it adjusts; it may get suspicious.
• A synthetic feline pheromone spray or wipe in the carrier may help.
• Expect it to take days or weeks.

Once the cat is comfortable, the same page suggests short "test drives" in the car with a favorite treat. It also says a carrier used on stressful trips may still hold stress pheromones; at the least, clean it with a non-scented cleanser, rinse it and let it dry in the sun.

Getting a reluctant cat inside

If you have to go now and your cat is not used to the carrier, Cat Friendly Homes suggests:

1. Put the carrier in a small room with few hiding places, bring the cat in and close the door. Move slowly and calmly.
2. Don't chase the cat; it makes her more scared.
3. Offer treats or toys to encourage her to walk in.
4. If she won't, and the carrier opens at the top, gently cradle her and lower her in.
5. Or take the top half off, get her into the bottom half, and calmly replace the top. Wrapping her in a towel can keep her legs out of the way.

For a trained cat, the same page suggests holding food back for a few hours, then tossing a few favorite treats into the carrier. If your cat stays very frightened even with practice, it says to talk to your veterinarian about medication before the visit (more on that).

In the car and at the clinic

Cover the carrier with a towel or blanket to block the changing view, and carry it "with both arms like a valuable package," holding it from the bottom rather than by the handle alone, which Cat Friendly Homes says makes the cat feel unstable. One cat per carrier.

In the car, Cat Friendly Homes relays the Center for Pet Safety's advice: belt a carrier into the back seat only if it has been crash tested; otherwise put it on the floor behind the driver or front passenger seat. It also warns that a cat loose in the car can be badly hurt in an accident, get under your feet, or escape when a door opens. None of the carriers above is on the CPS certified list. The Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed is, rated 5 stars with a 15 lb test dog in August 2024, but on Amazon it was sold only by a third-party store when we checked. If you have more than one cat, Cat Friendly Homes suggests leaving the returning cat in the carrier for a few minutes to see how the others react, because a cat back from the vet smells unfamiliar.

Recalls and what we left out

Petmate recalled Pet Zone laser pointer and LED ball toys in August 2025, sold at Menards, for a button-battery hazard; it does not involve carriers. We found no CPSC recall of the carriers above in the CPSC recall database; see our pet product recall page for FDA and CPSC pet recalls.
