What "orthopedic" means on a dog bed

Nothing official that we could find. We found no federal or industry standard for how thick or firm a dog bed must be to use the word, so treat it as the maker's description. Three things on the listing tell you more:

• Foam type. A solid memory-foam slab (KOPEKS, PetFusion) or layered foam (Big Barker, Casper) is different from egg-crate foam (Bedsure, Furhaven's top layer). Egg-crate foam is cut into peaks; the makers use it for pressure relief, but it is not a solid slab.
• Thickness. A heavy dog needs enough foam that its hips and elbows don't press through to the floor. Big Barker and KOPEKS list 7 in; Furhaven, PetFusion and Casper give overall heights that include the bolsters.
• Foam certification. Big Barker, Bedsure and PetFusion say their foam is CertiPUR-US certified.

Big Barker also cites a University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine study on its listing, in which it says large dogs showed less joint pain after sleeping on its bed. That is Big Barker's summary of a study it points to; we have not reviewed it, and it doesn't tell you anything about the other beds.

Key point: a bed can make a stiff dog more comfortable, but it doesn't treat arthritis. The AVMA lists orthopedic pet beds as one of several home changes, alongside raised feeding platforms and pet stairs or ramps, after a vet has looked at the dog.

Signs your dog's joints need a vet

The AVMA's senior pet guide says a common cause of a change in activity is arthritis. You may notice your dog starting to avoid running, jumping, climbing stairs or getting into cars. It lists other signs:

• Favoring a leg
• Walking stiffly
• Difficulty sitting down or standing up
• Sleeping more
• Resisting being touched or petted
• Playing less
• Showing unusual aggression toward people or other pets

"There may be other reasons for these changes, too," the AVMA says, and all of them "are good reasons to have your veterinarian examine your pet." It also says senior pets should see a vet twice a year or more, and that a senior dog may need a new sleeping area to avoid stairs.

How to size an orthopedic bed

Size by length, not only weight. Big Barker's size guide says to "measure from your dog's nose to base of tail," and puts Golden Retrievers, Labradors and German Shepherds in its Large group.

• Big dogs that stretch out: the KOPEKS at 50 x 34 in is the longest bed here, and the Big Barker Large is 48 x 30 in.
• Big dogs that curl or lean: the Furhaven chaise, 40 x 32 in with bolsters on two sides, rated for dogs up to 95 lb.
• Medium dogs: the Casper Medium; note that its inner sleep area is 25 x 17 in inside the bolsters.
• Small seniors and cats: the PetFusion Small, 25 x 20 in; PetFusion says it suits small dogs and cats.

Bolsters give a dog something to rest its head on, but they take up length. If your dog sleeps stretched out, measure the flat area inside the bolsters, not the outside size.

Covers, liners and cleaning

A senior dog's bed gets washed more often, so the cover matters as much as the foam:

• Waterproof or water-resistant layer: KOPEKS includes a waterproof liner, Bedsure laminates a waterproof layer into the cover, and PetFusion has a water-resistant cover and liner.
• Washing: KOPEKS says to wash the cover on a delicate cycle below 30°C (86°F), avoid bleach and let the liner dry fully before putting it back. PetFusion says to tumble dry on gentle, no bleach. Casper says tumble dry low.

Bottom line: buy the Big Barker for the deepest published foam, the KOPEKS for length, the Furhaven for a large dog that leans on bolsters, and the Bedsure if a low entrance matters. None of these brands appears on our pet product recall list as of September 2026.
