Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes (2026): Weight Sensors, Kitten Limits and the Refills They Need

A self-cleaning litter box is for an adult cat above the maker's minimum weight: PETKIT and CATLINK say 3.3 lb, Neakasa 3.3 lb on the M1 Plus, PETLIBRO 2.2 lb, Whisker 3 lb for the Litter-Robot 4, and PetSafe says to keep a ScoopFree unplugged until a kitten is 6 months old. This page compares six boxes sold by Amazon.com or the maker, lists how each one senses the cat and what it keeps needing (bags, trays, filters, deodorizers), and sets out what Cornell, the ASPCA and the AAFP say about getting a cat to use any box at all.

Also on the market, without cards: the Whisker Litter-Robot 4 (3 to 25 lb; its Amazon listings were sold by Spreetail, not Amazon.com or Whisker) and the CATLINK Scooper Open-X (3.3 lb and over 6 months; sold on Amazon by a third-party storefront rather than a store under CATLINK's own name). Their rules are below.

The minimum weight and age, maker by maker

Every one of these boxes decides the cat has left by weighing it or watching for it. A kitten that is too light may not register, and a moving drum or rake is not something a small kitten should be in. So each maker sets a floor, and each gives a workaround for smaller cats.

• PETKIT says the Purobot Max 3 suits cats "6+ months old, weighing 1.5–10 kg (3.3–22 lbs)," per its Purobot Max 3 page, and both PETKIT listings say "do not use for young pets under 6 months."
• PetSafe's ScoopFree manual says: "If your kitten is under 6 months of age, leave the unit UNPLUGGED and scoop waste until kitten is 6 months old." It says the box is "best for cats under 15 lb" and is not intended for "handicapped, incapacitated or very old cats that might experience difficulty in entering or leaving." That manual covers PetSafe's ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box (PAL00-16805); check the one in your box, since PetSafe sells several ScoopFree models.
• Neakasa's M1 Plus listing supports "cats from 3.3–33 lbs," with "Kitten Mode" in its app for kittens under 3.3 lb. Neakasa's own M1 page gives 2.2 lb for the original M1, so the figure depends on the model.
• PETLIBRO says the Luma "is designed for adult cats weighing between 2.2 lb (1 kg) and 22 lb (10 kg). For kittens under 6 months, cats under 2.2 lb, or pregnant or nursing cats, please disable the auto-cleaning function and use manual cleaning mode instead," per its Luma page.
• Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4 "is suitable for cats that weigh 3-25 lbs" and that "kittens that weigh at least 3 lbs can safely use Litter-Robot 4 in automatic mode," per its Litter-Robot 4 page. Under 3 lb, it recommends "semi-automatic" mode: power the unit on to cycle only after the kitten has used it and the clumps have set.
• CATLINK lists a minimum of 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) and "over 6 months old" for the Scooper Open-X, with a Kitten Mode of manual cleaning only below that, per its Open-X page.

How they sense the cat

All six pause when they detect a cat, and each maker describes a different mix of sensors.

Weight sensors are the common thread: PETKIT (4 on each model), Neakasa (4, per its site), PETLIBRO and CATLINK, whose sensors "detect 0.1 lb changes," per CATLINK. PETKIT and PETLIBRO also use the weight to tell cats apart in the app.

Infrared and laser add a second check at the entrance: PETKIT's PuraMax 2 has 7 infrared sensors, Neakasa describes "6 sets of sweeping infrared sensors" on the M1 Plus, and Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4 "uses laser and weight sensor technology to detect when your cat enters and exits the globe."

Cameras are the newest layer. PETLIBRO's Luma combines "weight, visual, and infrared motion sensors" and says "if a cat is detected, Luma pauses instantly."

Timers do the rest. The ScoopFree rake runs "20 minutes after your cat uses the litter box," per PetSafe's manual, and its "detection sensors automatically reset the rake timer" if the cat comes back. Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4's sensors trigger a countdown timer before its cycle.

Two practical rules from the makers: PETKIT says not to put its boxes on carpets or mats, "as this may interfere with the sensors," and Whisker says translucent or white crystal litter can confuse the Litter-Robot 4's litter-level sensor.

The refills each box keeps needing

A self-cleaning box moves waste into a drawer, bag or tray. Something has to be replaced, and the maker usually sells it.

A few things the table does not show:

• PetSafe's crystal trays are the litter as well as the liner. The ScoopFree Crystal models are "compatible only with PetSafe ScoopFree disposable trays with premium crystal litter," per the Crystal Pro listing, and the manual says "do not add litter or remove waste during normal operation." Tray life is shorter, it says, for cats over 10, cats with diabetes, kidney or thyroid problems, and in humid rooms. The SmartSpin avoids trays: PetSafe says it takes "any litter."
• Neakasa skips the deodorizer. Its listing says the brush-strip seal means "no activated carbon or deodorizing packs needed." It does sell an optional litter deodorizer.
• PETKIT's deodorizers depend on the model. The Purobot Max 3 ships with the N50 2.0 and its listing says the N60 is not included; the N60's own listing names the Purobot Max 3 Premium and other Purobot models, at up to 60 days per piece. PETKIT's bags for the PuraMax fit the Max 3 too, but not the Purobot Ultra or Max Pro.
• Subscriptions are a refill of a kind. The Luma's AI analysis, recording and playback need PETLIBRO's Video Cloud AI plan; live view does not.

Bag intervals assume one cat. With two or three, expect to change them about twice as often; PETKIT says twice a week for two cats.

Recalls: we found no FDA or CPSC recall of any of these brands on our pet recall page or in the CPSC recall database on September 29, 2026. The only CPSC recall naming PetSafe that we found was a 2010 recall of power adapters sold with a heated pet bed. Check again before buying a used box.

A cat has to accept it first

A self-cleaning box only helps if the cat uses it. The ASPCA's litter box page says "because self-cleaning boxes are generally cleaner than traditional types of litter boxes, many cats accept them readily," and adds: "However, if you're using a self-cleaning litter box and your cat starts eliminating outside the box, try switching to a traditional type of litter box." It lists "hearing a loud noise or commotion" among the things that can upset a cat while it is in the box.

Cornell's Feline Health Center, on house soiling, says "an aversion to the litter box can also lead to house soiling," and to "provide as many boxes as there are cats in the house, plus one." The American Association of Feline Practitioners' Feline Behavior Guidelines say the same, "the ideal number of litter boxes is one per cat, plus one," placed "in at least 2 different locations," and not "next to noisy appliances." The same guidelines note that cats that dig for 4 seconds or less before eliminating "may be candidates for elimination problems."

That one-plus-one rule means a one-cat home should have two boxes anyway, so the sensible setup is the self-cleaning box plus an ordinary one. It gives the cat a choice, keeps a box working when the machine is off or a kitten is under the limit, and makes it obvious if the cat avoids the new one.

PetSafe's manual describes a gradual switch: add a few handfuls of the old litter to the new box, "stop cleaning your cat's old litter box, allowing it to remain dirty," and remove it only "once your cat has transitioned." Cornell adds that if you change litter brands, "do so gradually, adding small amounts of new litter to the old."

A cat that suddenly stops using any box may be ill. Cornell says "any medical condition that interferes with a cat's normal urination or defecation behavior can cause litter box problems," and the FelineVMA's environmental needs handout says that if a cat starts passing urine or stools outside the box, "contact your veterinarian right away." If that happens, ask your vet before blaming the box (why we say that).

What is the minimum cat weight for a Litter-Robot 4?

3 lb. Whisker says kittens that weigh at least 3 lb can use it in automatic mode, and lighter kittens should use it in semi-automatic mode.

What refills does a self-cleaning litter box need?

Usually waste bags and a deodorizer or carbon filter; PetSafe's crystal models need disposable crystal trays instead. Bags last about 1 to 2 weeks for one cat, per most makers.

Should I keep a regular litter box too?

Cornell and the AAFP both say one box per cat plus one, so a one-cat home needs two anyway. The ASPCA says to switch to a traditional box if a cat starts going outside a self-cleaning one.
