How do I check if my pet's food has been recalled?
Find the brand, product name, lot code and best-by date on the bag or can, then search for the brand in the list on this page and on the FDA's own list of animal and veterinary recalls at https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/safety-health/recalls-withdrawals. A recall notice names the exact lots and dates it covers, so compare them with your package before you throw anything away.
What should I do if my pet's food or treats are recalled?
Stop feeding it and follow the instructions in the official notice, which usually offers a refund at the store where you bought it. Keep the package and lot number, wash bowls and scoops, and wash your hands after handling the food: Salmonella and Listeria in pet food can make people sick too. If your pet shows signs of illness, call your veterinarian.
How do I report a problem with pet food?
The FDA takes pet food complaints through its Safety Reporting Portal or an FDA consumer complaint coordinator; the steps are at https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/report-problem/how-report-pet-food-complaint. Keep the package and any remaining food. For a pet toy, bed, gate or other product that is not food or medicine, report it to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.
If a product is not on this list, is it safe?
No. This list covers FDA and CPSC recall notices since January 1, 2024 that we could match to cat and dog products with confidence. It leaves out livestock feed, food for other animals, veterinary drugs and anything we could not classify, and a product can be unsafe without ever being recalled. If you think your pet has eaten something toxic, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control).
