Cat Litter Mats (2026): Honeycomb, Rubber and Waterproof Layers

To stop litter tracking out of the box, put a mat where your cat steps out: a double-layer honeycomb mat such as the Pieviev or iPrimio traps the most and pours back into the box, and a coiled-mesh mat from Gorilla Grip or Amazon Basics grips the floor better. If urine over the edge is the bigger problem, the Gorilla Grip silicone mat has a raised rim that holds liquid. This guide compares six mats by size, surface and waterproof layer, and sets out each maker's cleaning steps.

Honeycomb, coiled mesh or silicone?

Honeycomb, double-layer mats (Pieviev, iPrimio) have a top layer full of large holes over a closed bottom layer. Litter stuck to the paws falls through the holes and stays in the pocket between the layers. To empty it, you open one edge and pour the litter out. Pieviev describes it this way: "You just pick up the mat and all the litter falls through and then dump it back in the litter box." Gorilla Grip makes a honeycomb mat too, in a small 24 x 15 in size.

Coiled-mesh mats (Gorilla Grip Coiled Mesh, Amazon Basics) are single sheets with a loopy vinyl surface and grooves. Gorilla Grip says the "thick mesh coils" grab litter and the "deep grooves on the topside also collect litter," with a textured backing that keeps the mat in place "even with active cats." Litter stays in the surface, so you shake, tip or vacuum it off.

Silicone mats (Gorilla Grip Silicone) are smooth, with a raised edge. They catch less litter from the paws but hold spills: Gorilla Grip says its 0.2 in edge "holds 16 cups of liquid" and that the mat is third-party tested as waterproof.

A textured rubber-backed mat like the Catit is the simplest: a soft surface that brushes litter off the paws and a non-slip back.

How big a mat do you need?

Size the mat to where your cat leaves the box, not to the box itself. A cat steps out and shakes its paws in the first stride or two, so the mat needs to reach past the entrance.

• Open box: the cat can step out on any side. Use a mat at least as long as the box's longest side, or put the box on the mat.
• Front-door or hooded box: litter comes out in one place. A mat that starts at the door and runs a couple of feet out does more than a wide one.
• Top-entry box: the cat climbs out of the lid, so litter lands where it jumps down. Put the mat there.

As a rough guide, the 30 x 24 in mats (Pieviev, Gorilla Grip Silicone) and 35 in mats (Gorilla Grip Coiled Mesh, Amazon Basics) suit a standard or large box. Measure your box's footprint and its exit before you buy; our litter box guide gives the dimensions of each box it covers.

The ASPCA's litter box problems page says "the majority of cats prefer large boxes that they can enter easily" and that most cats like "one to two inches of litter rather than three to four inches." If you move up to a larger box, move up a mat size too.

Waterproof layers and urine

A mat that sits in front of a litter box will sooner or later catch urine, whether from a cat that stands too close to the edge or a kitten still learning. What matters is whether it stops there.

• Pieviev says its bottom layer "is waterproof and also slip-resistant which will not allow any liquid to go through."
• iPrimio says its film "repels urine," but adds that the nylon mesh border around the perimeter "may absorb urine if excessive," and suggests "puppy pads as they soak excessive urine" for very messy cats.
• Gorilla Grip Coiled Mesh is "water resistant," designed "to not allow liquids to pass through."
• Gorilla Grip Silicone holds 16 cups behind its raised edge.
• Amazon Basics has a "waterproof backing."

If urine soaks through to the floor anyway, clean it with an enzyme cleaner; our enzyme cleaner guide explains why. And if your cat has started urinating outside the box, the ASPCA says: "The first step in resolving elimination outside the litter box is to rule out urine marking and medical problems. Have your cat checked thoroughly by a veterinarian." A mat catches the mess; it does not solve why the cat is missing the box. Ask your vet (more on that).

Cleaning, by each maker's instructions

• Pieviev: open the edge and pour trapped litter back; the EVA surface "can be removed easily," and if a cat vomits on it, "you can hose it off."
• iPrimio: open the "EZ Open Edge" and clean "under sink head, shower head, or shake off."
• Gorilla Grip Coiled Mesh: "tip and pour collected litter back into the box," vacuum or shake it out, and "for a deep clean use mild soap and water, always air dry."
• Gorilla Grip Honeycomb: rinse "with soap and water, dry completely," and wash before first use. It may ship rolled or folded; Gorilla Grip says to lay it flat under a weight for at least 24 hours if it is creased.
• Gorilla Grip Silicone: shake out, wipe clean, and "for deep cleaning use mild soap and water," then hang it from its hole to dry.
• Catit: "shake off loose litter, vacuum for quick cleanups, or wash with mild detergent and warm water."

Several makers suggest pouring the trapped litter back into the box to use less. That's reasonable for dry, clean litter; we would throw away anything that got wet or soiled.

For the box itself, the ASPCA says to "scoop at least once a day" and, once a week, to "clean all litter boxes with warm water and unscented soap." Doing the mat at the same time keeps it simple.
