Ruffwear vs Kurgo (2026): Harnesses, Car Gear and Outdoor Kit

Buy Ruffwear for walking, hiking and cold-weather gear, and Kurgo for gear that lives in the car. That is where each brand's range is deepest. On the question owners ask most, whether either sells a crash-tested car harness, the honest answer is that both have run their own crash tests and neither is on the Center for Pet Safety certified list. This page compares the two on what you can check: harness designs, crash-test claims, size charts, warranties and who sells them on Amazon.

Walking harnesses: Front Range vs Tru-Fit and Journey Air

The Ruffwear Front Range is a padded everyday harness with two leash points. Per the listing, it has "an aluminum V-ring on the back and reinforced webbing at the chest," closed-cell foam in the chest and belly panels, four adjustment points, reflective trim and a loop for a clip-on light. The chest point is what makes it useful for a dog that pulls; our no-pull harness guide explains how a front clip turns a lunging dog.

Kurgo has two answers. The Journey Air is its active-dog harness: a "breathable padded vest" with a back assist handle, ripstop and mesh, reflective trim and aluminum hardware, per the listing. The Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit is Kurgo's car harness, but Kurgo also sells it as "a daily use harness fit," with "leash attachments on back and front of harness," five points of adjustment and a padded chest plate, per Kurgo's product page.

If you want one harness for walks and car rides, the Tru-Fit is the one of these designed for both. If you want the lighter, trail-focused harness, the Front Range and Journey Air are the closer match. Ruffwear also makes the Flagline, with a lift handle, and the Web Master, which it calls escape-resistant, both sold by Ruffwear on Amazon.

Car harnesses: what each maker says, and what CPS lists

A "crash tested" label on a dog harness is not regulated. The Center for Pet Safety, a nonprofit that crash tests pet restraints, runs the only independent certification program. Its certified directory lists harnesses such as the Sleepypod Clickit Sport and Saker Bomber, plus certified carriers and crates. When we checked on September 29, 2026, neither Ruffwear nor Kurgo had a product in it. Our crash-tested car restraint guide lists every certified product and how CPS tests.

Kurgo's claim. Kurgo's crash testing page says that "in June 2018, Kurgo's Small, Medium and Large Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Smart Harness (v. 3)" was tested at "Calspan's Buffalo, NY crash test facility," using a procedure that "adapts FMVSS 213's strict safety standards that are designed to protect children and makes them applicable to dogs." Kurgo says the harnesses passed two criteria: staying within excursion limits of 32 in for dogs up to 50 lb and 36 in for dogs of 51 to 75 lb, and not breaking to the point of "complete separation." The product page says the Tru-Fit is "crash tested for dogs up to 75lbs."

CPS has its own history with this harness. Its 2013 harness study included the Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength, and a note added in October 2018 says "Kurgo reached out to Center for Pet Safety to explain that they have redesigned this product since the 2013 harness study" and "CPS has not yet retested the Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength harness."

Ruffwear's claim. Ruffwear's Load Up testing page says prototypes were tested at MGA Research Corporation, "dynamically tested under the conditions outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213," with "25-pound, 45-pound, and 75-pound dog-mannequins," and that in all three tests "the dog mannequin stayed in an upright position and on the seat."

Ruffwear is unusually direct about CPS. The same page says "the Load Up™ Harnesses would not meet CPS's current certification based on the excursion measurement limits," because meeting them would likely mean moving the seat belt attachment higher on the dog's back. Ruffwear puts it low on purpose, so the dog can stand and lie down and, it says, stays upright in a crash. That is a design choice you can weigh, but it is Ruffwear's reasoning, not an independent result.

The tether question. The Tru-Fit comes with a "10" seatbelt tether with all steel carabiner," and Kurgo says to use it "for maximum crash protection and to limit excursion." CPS's extension tether advisory warns that extension tethers "give pets too much movement during a sudden stop or crash." If you use any tether, keep it as short as the maker supplies and never add an extension.

Key point: if a certified harness matters to you, neither brand has one. Buy from the CPS list, and use either brand's harness for walks.

Size charts compared

Ruffwear sizes its harnesses by one number. The Front Range page says to measure "around the widest part of the rib cage" and, "in between sizes? Choose the larger size." Its girth ranges:

• XXS 13 to 17 in, XS 17 to 22 in, S 22 to 27 in, M 27 to 32 in, L/XL 32 to 42 in.

The Load Up uses the same five girth ranges.

Kurgo's Tru-Fit chart uses three: neck, chest and dog weight. Per Kurgo's page:

• X-Small: neck 9 to 13 in, chest 12 to 18 in, 5 to 10 lb.
• Small: neck 12 to 20 in, chest 16 to 22 in, 10 to 25 lb.
• Medium: neck 16 to 25 in, chest 18 to 28 in, 25 to 50 lb.
• Large: neck 18 to 30 in, chest 24 to 34 in, 50 to 80 lb.
• X-Large: neck 24 to 35 in, chest 28 to 44 in, 80 to 110 lb.

Kurgo says "the fit should be snug but not restrictive." One detail matters for car use: Kurgo's crash test covered the small, medium and large sizes with dogs up to 75 lb, and the product page says tested "for dogs up to 75 pounds," while the X-Large chart runs to 110 lb.

Between sizes, Ruffwear says to size up. Kurgo's ranges overlap instead, so measure the neck and chest and pick the size where both numbers fit.

Warranties: what each promises

Kurgo calls its warranty lifetime. Its warranty page says that "if, during your product's lifetime, it does not function as it should due to a manufacturing defect, we will replace your product free of charge," for products bought "through authorized Kurgo dealers." It excludes toys ("toys, after all, are mostly to be chewed") and products "used in an unintended way," and says items that fail from "normal wear and tear, abuse, accident, critters, or natural breakdown of materials" can be replaced "for a nominal fee."

Ruffwear does not put a time limit on its promise. Its guarantee page says "we proudly guarantee against defects in materials and craftsmanship," for products bought from "an Authorized Dealer or through ruffwear.com," with an e-gift card for the full replacement value in the U.S. It excludes "damage caused by chewing, cleaning, disassembly, alterations, or modifications" and "normal wear and tear, abuse, or fire."

In short: both cover defects, neither covers a dog that chews through a strap, and Kurgo offers a paid replacement for worn gear. Both limit coverage to authorized dealers, so keep your receipt and ask the maker if you are unsure whether a seller counts.

Range: outdoor kit vs car kit

Ruffwear's catalog is built around the outdoors. On this site alone, we cover its Grip Trex and Polar Trex boots and its Vert and Powder Hound winter coats, all sold by Ruffwear on Amazon.

Kurgo's deepest line is the car. It sells hammock, bench and bucket seat covers, a backseat barrier and car harnesses, mostly sold by Amazon.com, plus walking harnesses, a jacket and boots. A seat cover like the Wander keeps hair and mud off the seat; it does not hold a dog in a crash.

Buy Ruffwear if your dog's gear is mostly for walks, hikes and weather, you want a padded dual-clip harness like the Front Range, or you like the Load Up's low seat belt loop and have read Ruffwear's test page.

Buy Kurgo if you are kitting out the car (cover, barrier, harness), you want one harness for walks and rides in the Tru-Fit, or you value a lifetime defect warranty with a paid replacement for wear.

For a crash-rated restraint, buy neither: choose from the CPS list.

Recall check

Ruffwear voluntarily recalled one version of the Load Up. Its recall notice says that on January 25, 2022 it recalled the Load Up released on August 25, 2021, after "two reports where the metal side-release buckle can unclip during use when only one of the buckle's two triggers is depressed," with "zero reports of a dog's injury or death." That version used a single metal side-release buckle; Ruffwear says harnesses with pass-through buckles, including the redesign released in June 2023, are not affected, and no other Ruffwear harness is.

We found no CPSC recall of Kurgo or Ruffwear products in the CPSC recall database, and neither brand appears on our pet product recall page as of September 28, 2026. If your dog has a joint or back problem that affects how a harness should fit, ask your vet (more on that).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ruffwear or Kurgo crash tested?

Both makers say they crash-tested a car harness (Ruffwear's Load Up, Kurgo's Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit) using procedures based on the child car seat standard, FMVSS 213. Neither is on the Center for Pet Safety certified list, so those are the makers' claims.

Why isn't the Ruffwear Load Up CPS certified?

Ruffwear says it has not been tested to CPS's protocol and, based on its own tests, would not meet CPS's excursion limits, because Ruffwear places the seat belt loop low on the dog's back.

Does Kurgo have a lifetime warranty?

Yes, against manufacturing defects on products bought from authorized dealers, per Kurgo. Toys are excluded, and gear that fails from normal wear can be replaced for a nominal fee.

Can I use the Ruffwear Front Range in the car?

Ruffwear sells it as a walking harness; its car harness is the Load Up, which is not CPS certified either.
