Dog Gates and Playpens (2026): Pressure vs Hardware Mount, and Top-of-Stairs Rules

For a doorway or the bottom of the stairs, a pressure-mounted walk-through gate is enough for most dogs: the Carlson Extra Wide at 30 in tall, or Carlson's 36 in Extra Tall for a dog that jumps. For the top of the stairs, don't use a pressure gate at all; Carlson and Regalo both say so in their instructions. Use one screwed into the wall, such as the MyPet Universal with its included hardware. This guide compares six gates and pens and sets out each maker's mounting, height and stair rules.

The Carlson figures come from Carlson's Extra Wide product page and its manual; the rest are from the Amazon listings. Measure the opening at the floor and at gate height before you order: both Carlson and Regalo publish a gap their gates do not fit.

Pressure mount or hardware mount?

A pressure-mounted gate wedges between two walls or door frames with threaded spindles you tighten by hand. It goes up without drilling and comes down when you move, which is why most doorway gates are built this way. It holds only as well as the pressure and the wall cups.

A hardware-mounted gate screws into the wall or frame, and its door swings on hinges. It takes drilling but cannot be pushed out of the opening.

Both Carlson and Regalo treat the wall cups as required, not optional. Carlson's manual says: "You must install wall cups to keep gate in place. Without wall cups, child can push out and escape." Regalo's listing says "Wall cups must be used to keep the gate securely in place." A large dog leaning on a gate pushes the same way a toddler does. Carlson also says to check "regularly to see if all the hardware and mountings are tightened" and notes the gap between gate and wall should not exceed 2.5 in.

The top-of-stairs rule

This is the one rule every maker here agrees on. Carlson's warning panel reads: "To prevent falls, never use at top of stairs." Regalo's listing says the same: "To prevent falls, never use at the top of stairs." Carlson's Extra Tall listing describes its gate as a "gate for stairs (bottom only)."

Both makers give the same reason, in the same words: "to prevent falls." A pressure gate is held in place only by pressure, and at the top of a staircase there is nothing below it to stop a fall if it gives way.

For the top of the stairs, buy a gate with a hardware kit and screw it in. Of the gates here, only the MyPet Universal comes with that option: MyPet says its included hardware mount lets you "install as a swing gate or a gate for the top of a stairway." It is 26 in tall, so it suits a small dog. For a bigger dog at the top of the stairs, look for a taller hardware-mounted gate and follow its manual; a pressure gate at the bottom of the stairs is fine.

How tall does a dog gate need to be?

No maker publishes a height-per-breed chart. What they do publish is when to stop using a gate. Carlson's manual says: "Stop using when a child or pet can climb over or dislodge the gate." It also says: "Never stack gates on top of each other to form a taller barrier. This could result in serious injury or death."

So the practical test is your dog. If your dog puts its paws on top of a 30 in gate, as in the photo at the top of this page, or has already jumped one, buy a taller gate rather than a second one. Carlson's Extra Tall adds 6 in over its Extra Wide. For a pen, MidWest sells its Exercise Pen in heights from 18 to 48 in and suggests a mesh top "for pets that jump or climb."

Key point: check the gaps as well as the height. Carlson's manual warns of a "strangulation hazard: pets can force themselves into very small openings; use this gate with pets whose heads will not fit into openings in the gate, between the gate and floor, or between the gate and wall." Carlson lists 2 to 2.5 in between bars on its Extra Wide; Richell lists 1 1/4 in between slats. A toy breed or young puppy needs the narrower spacing.

Gates with a cat door

A gate with a small pet door lets a cat through while keeping a bigger dog out, which is handy when the cat's food or litter box is on the other side. Both Carlson gates here have one. On the Extra Wide, Carlson lists the door at 7.5 in wide by 7.75 in high, and it latches shut when you don't want it open.

Measure your smallest dog before relying on it. A small dog that fits through a 7.5 x 7.75 in opening will use it too. And Carlson's manual says that if children are in the house, "the small pet door must remain closed and securely latched."

Cats can also jump most pet gates. A pet door keeps the dog out of the cat's room; it doesn't keep the cat in.

Playpens and freestanding gates

A playpen or exercise pen is a folding ring of panels. The MidWest Exercise Pen uses eight 24 in panels to make a 16 sq ft space, has a step-through door with a slide-bolt latch, and can clip onto a crate to give a puppy a potty-pad area beside its bed. MidWest includes four ground anchors for outdoor use. A freestanding gate stands on its own feet. The Richell Pet Sitter Gate Plus spans 39.8 to 59.8 in with side panels that stop a dog walking around its ends, or works as a tension-mounted gate. Richell recommends it only for dogs of 6.6 to 17.6 lb, so treat it as a boundary for a small dog, not a barrier for a big one.

Carlson's manual adds a line that applies to every gate and pen here: "This product will not necessarily prevent all accidents. Never leave child or pet unattended."

Recalls: baby gates sold on Amazon

Pet gates and baby gates are often the same product. The CPSC recalled three baby gates sold on Amazon in 2025, all for entrapment hazards: Yiwu Baili's child safety gates (May 2025), HabiLife Direct's retractable gates (March 2025) and UVIPC baby gates (February 2025). None of the brands on this page is among them, and all three recalled gates were sold by third-party storefronts, one reason we kept to Amazon.com and brand stores. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a pressure-mounted gate at the top of the stairs?

No. Carlson's manual says "never use at top of stairs," and Regalo's listing says the same. Use a hardware-mounted gate screwed into the wall at the top, and keep pressure gates for doorways and the bottom of stairs.

How tall should a dog gate be?

Tall enough that your dog can't climb over or knock it down; Carlson says to stop using a gate once a pet can. If your dog clears a 30 in gate, go to a 36 in gate, and never stack two gates.

Do I need the wall cups on a pressure gate?

Yes. Carlson says "You must install wall cups to keep gate in place," and Regalo says wall cups must be used.

Will a gate with a cat door keep my small dog out?

Only if the dog is too big for the door. Carlson's Extra Wide pet door is 7.5 x 7.75 in; a small dog that fits through it will use it.
