Pet Strollers (2026): Weight Limits, Brakes and Which Dogs Actually Need One

A pet stroller is worth buying for a dog or cat that still wants to go out but cannot walk the whole way: an older dog, a dog on restricted activity after surgery, or a small pet on a long day out. Choose it by the weight limit on the listing, then by how the pet gets in, the brakes and the tether. For small pets, the Pet Gear No-Zip Happy Trails Lite; for a medium dog that should not be lifted, the Pet Gear No-Zip Excursion; for a large senior dog, the Ibiyaya Grand Cruiser.

How we chose: we did not test these strollers; we took weight limits, brakes and tethers from the makers' listings and pages, and kept strollers sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 28, 2026.

Which dogs actually need a stroller

Most healthy dogs need walks, not rides. A stroller earns its place in three situations.

An older dog that slows down. A dog that tires halfway round the block may still enjoy the rest of the walk from a stroller. But slowing down is not always just age. The AAHA senior care guidelines on pain management say clients "often perceive changes in their geriatric pets as normal aging when it may be the result of clinical chronic pain," and that managing pain and mobility "must be integrative and multimodal," from medication and weight management to rehabilitation and changes at home. A dog on restricted activity. After spay or neuter surgery, the ASPCA's after-surgery instructions say to limit movement "during the 7 to 10 day recovery period, as strenuous activity, such as running, jumping or playing, could disrupt the healing process," and not to take the pet for long walks. A stroller can let a restless dog get outside without the walk, if your vet agrees; ask your vet what your dog is allowed after its surgery (more on that). A small pet on a long outing. A toy dog at a street fair or a cat that tolerates getting out is easier to keep safe in a stroller than on a leash in a crowd. For a cat, a stroller is an alternative to a harness walk; our escape-proof cat harness guide covers the harness side.

Weight limit first, then entry

Weight limit. Stay under it with room to spare. The listings here range from 17 lb to 110 lb, and the number is the only way to compare frames. A 25 lb limit rules out a beagle that weighs 28.

How the dog gets in. Most strollers load from the top, so you lift the pet in. That is fine for a cat or a toy dog. For a dog you should not lift, look for a walk-in design. Pet Gear says the Excursion's front and back doors let pets "be loaded from either the front or back of the stroller and exit without having to turn around," which it calls "a huge benefit for large or injured pets." Ibiyaya says the Grand Cruiser's frame sits about 23 cm off the ground so older or injured dogs can get in and out with minimal effort, and sells a ramp for it separately.

Interior space. Pet Gear publishes interior dimensions: 22 x 11 x 19 in for the Happy Trails Lite and 30 x 13 x 22 in for the Jogger. Measure your dog lying down, nose to tail base, and compare.

Brakes and tethers

Brakes. A stroller with a dog in it will roll on a slope while you open a gate. The Happy Trails Lite lists rear safety brakes and the Excursion lists back wheel brakes. Ibiyaya's Compact 3-in-1 lists a quick braking system. We could not find a brake described on the Jogger, Regal Plus or Grand Cruiser listings; check the manual, and set whatever brake it has every time you stop.

Tethers. Every stroller here has an interior tether to stop a dog jumping out. Clip it to a harness. Pet Gear says its tether "can be attached to pet's harness to keep them secure," and the Gen7 listing describes a "safety tether for harness attachment." A collar clip turns a jump into a pull on the neck. Keep the tether short enough that the dog cannot get its front legs over the edge, and keep the canopy closed with a cat inside.

A stroller is not a car seat

Some strollers, including the Ibiyaya Compact 3-in-1 and Pet Gear's VIEW 360 system, convert to a carrier or a booster seat. That makes them convenient between the car and the vet's door. It does not make them crash tested. None of the strollers here is on the Center for Pet Safety certified list, and CPS's extension tether advisory says to "use a CPS Certified® harness, crate, or carrier" and to "secure pets in the back seat."

Recalls and what we left out

Gen7Pets is a Petmate brand, per its listing. Petmate recalled Pet Zone laser pointer and LED ball toys in August 2025 for a button-battery ingestion hazard; that recall does not involve strollers. We found no CPSC recall of a Pet Gear, Gen7Pets or Ibiyaya stroller in the CPSC recall database. Check any brand on our pet product recall page.

HPZ Pet Rover strollers were sold by a third-party store with a future availability date when we checked, so they did not meet our seller rule. One color of the Gen7 Regal Plus was sold by a third party and another was unavailable; the listing above is sold by Amazon.com.

More than your dog weighs, with some margin. The listings here run from 17 lb (Ibiyaya Compact) and 25 lb (Pet Gear Happy Trails Lite, Gen7 Regal Plus) to 40 lb (Pet Gear Excursion), 75 lb (Pet Gear No-Zip Jogger) and 110 lb (Ibiyaya Grand Cruiser).

Is a dog stroller good for a senior dog?

It can be, for a dog that enjoys going out but tires. AAHA's senior care guidelines warn that owners often mistake chronic pain for normal aging, so ask your vet about a dog that is slowing down before you plan around it.

Can I use a pet stroller as a car seat?

No. None of these strollers or stroller-carriers is on the Center for Pet Safety certified list; CPS says to use a certified harness, crate or carrier in the back seat.

Should the stroller tether go on the collar or the harness?

The harness. Pet Gear and Gen7Pets both describe their interior tethers as attaching to a harness.
