Pet Fountain Filters and Replacement Parts (2026): Which Filter Fits Which Fountain

A fountain filter has to match the fountain, and the only reliable match is the one its maker names: Catit's Triple Action filter for a full-size Flower Fountain, PETLIBRO's own filters for a Dockstream or stainless model, PETKIT's Filter Unit 3.0 or RECT for an Eversweet, and PetSafe's numbered carbon filters for a Drinkwell. This page lists which filter fits which fountain, what each maker says is inside it, how often each maker says to change it, and how often to clean the pump, which matters as much as the filter.

How we chose: we did not test these filters; we matched each one to its fountains using the makers' own pages and listings, and kept only filters sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store that were in stock on September 28, 2026.

What the layers do, in each maker's words

Most fountain filters stack two or three jobs into one cartridge.

A hair and debris layer. Catit calls its outer layer cotton mesh that "catches stray hairs and other debris." PETLIBRO's Dockstream filter uses non-woven fabric plus a foam pre-filter sponge, which its listing says "further filters debris to prevent blockages and damage." PetSafe puts a polyester pad on its premium carbon filter and sells a separate foam filter that, per the listing, "protects pump components from clogs and wear." This is the layer that saves the pump, since hair is what jams it.

Activated carbon. Every filter here has it. Catit says its carbon "helps remove foul odors and impurities"; PetSafe says its coconut shell carbon "removes bad tastes and odors from water."

Ion exchange resin. Catit and PETLIBRO add it. Catit says the resin softens water by filtering out excess calcium and magnesium; PETLIBRO's listing says it "removes heavy metal ions and softens water quality." If your tap water leaves white scale on the kettle, a filter with resin is the one to pick.

PETKIT describes its Filter Unit 3.0 more generally, as "double filter components and a high-density micropore filter" that "remove pet hair and most other impurities."

Several makers also claim their filters help with urinary health. Those are marketing claims, not something a filter maker can show on a product page, so we leave them out.

How often to change the filter, maker by maker

The intervals are not the same, so write down the one for your fountain.

• Catit: "Replace every 30 days for optimal results," or when the filter is visibly saturated. Catit also says Flower Fountains are for use only with Catit filters.
• PETLIBRO: "We recommend replacing the filters every two weeks to ensure your pet always has access to fresh water if used by one pet," and more often with several pets. The same rule appears on the Dockstream 2 page and in its filter listings.
• PETKIT Filter Unit 3.0: "Replace every 60 days in smart mode and 30 days in normal mode," per PETKIT's own filter page, which adds that the fountain's indicator light will tell you. The Amazon listing for the same filter gives only the 30-day figure, and PETKIT's Eversweet Solo 2 page says every four weeks, so 30 days is the safe reading.
• PETKIT Filter Unit RECT: every 2 to 4 weeks, per its listing, with a reminder in the PETKIT app.
• PetSafe Drinkwell: "Each filter provides 2-4 weeks of filtration" for the premium filter; the 360 filter should be replaced "every 2 to 4 weeks to maintain water freshness."

With several pets, use the short end of any range. PETLIBRO says so outright, and a filter clogged with more hair stops doing its job sooner.

Before you fit a new one: PETLIBRO's listings say to soak the filter for 5 minutes and rinse it for 30 seconds, so loose carbon dust does not end up in the water. PETKIT says to soak its filters for at least 10 minutes and to "reset the device after replacing filter," or the reminder light keeps counting from the old one.

Pumps: the part that actually fails

A fresh filter in a dirty fountain does little. Each maker gives its own cleaning schedule, and they are shorter than the filter schedules.

• Catit: "The pump should be removed from the fountain and disassembled for cleaning on a biweekly basis." Use warm water, a soft sponge and dish soap, and "never use aggressive detergents or an abrasive sponge," per its cleaning guide.
• PETLIBRO: a quick wipe of the fountain interior "once a week" and a thorough clean of all parts with dish soap, more often with more pets. The Dockstream 2 is pump-free: PETLIBRO says a magnetic rotor in the tank is driven from the base, so there is a rinseable rotor instead of a submerged pump.
• PETKIT: clean the fountain and change the water "once a week in summer and every 2-3 weeks in other seasons" (Filter Unit 3.0 page), or every two weeks outside summer for the Eversweet Max (RECT listing). Its Solo 2 listing says a dirty pump is the usual cause of weak flow or a noisy pump.
• PetSafe: its cleaning steps start "Unplug the fountain. Dump the water. Disassemble the fountain," then wash the impeller and brush out the motor cavity. PetSafe says the fountains are "dishwasher safe except for the motor and cord," but the page does not give an interval.

PetSafe and PETKIT also sell spare pumps; the Drinkwell 360 listing names its replacement pump part number (PAC00-13206), and PETKIT lists a replacement wireless pump on Amazon. If a cleaned pump still rattles or stops, that is the part to replace, not the filter.

Why bother: what Cornell says about fountains

The Cornell Feline Health Center's hydration page says cats need "about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day, so the average 10-pound cat should drink about one cup of water per day." On fountains it is careful: "Some cats increase their intake of water when provided with water fountains, but individual preferences among cats for these varies." Its first suggestion is simpler than any gadget: fresh water, in places the cat can easily reach, with no other pet guarding it.

So a fountain is worth keeping only if your cat uses it, and it is only as clean as its filter and pump. If a filter change slips by a month, a plain bowl washed every day is the cleaner option. If your cat's drinking changes suddenly, more or less, ask your vet rather than changing the fountain (why we say that).

Genuine filters, third-party packs and Veken

Searches for "fountain filter" on Amazon turn up many third-party packs "compatible with" Catit, PETLIBRO, PETKIT and Veken fountains, often with more filters per box. We left them out. They are not sold by the fountain's maker, and three of the makers say something about it: Catit says its Flower Fountains are "only for use with certified Catit filters," PETLIBRO's listings say off-brand filters "may cause leaks/pump failure," and PetSafe calls its own filters "the only filter brand certified to fit" the 360 fountains. We cannot check those claims, but they are the makers' terms, and a leak or a failed pump is the risk they name.

Veken filters for the C1, C1 Classic, D1 and D1 Pro fountains were sold on Amazon by a company called Aborder Products, not by Amazon.com or a store in Veken's name, so they get no card. The listing describes multi-layer filter media, coconut shell activated carbon, a "composite scale inhibitor" and pre-filter sponges, but gives no replacement interval, and Veken's own site would not load on September 29, 2026 (its security certificate had expired). If you own a Veken fountain, follow the interval in its manual.

PETLIBRO Capsule fountains take a different filter again: PETLIBRO sells an 8-pack for the Capsule cat fountain (PLWF002) and another for the Capsule dog fountain (PLWF008), both sold by Amazon.com.

Recalls: we found no FDA or CPSC recall of any of these fountains or filters on our pet recall page or in the CPSC recall database on September 29, 2026. The only CPSC recall naming PetSafe that we found was a 2010 recall of power adapters sold with a heated pet bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change a cat fountain filter?

Every 30 days for Catit, every two weeks for PETLIBRO with one pet, 30 days (normal mode) or 60 days (smart mode) for PETKIT Filter Unit 3.0, and every 2 to 4 weeks for PetSafe Drinkwell. Change it sooner with several pets or if it is clogged with hair.

Can I use a generic filter in my fountain?

Some will fit, but Catit says its Flower Fountains take only Catit filters, and PETLIBRO says off-brand filters may cause leaks or pump failure. Buying the maker's filter keeps you inside its instructions.

Do I need to soak a new fountain filter?

PETLIBRO says to soak it for 5 minutes and rinse it for 30 seconds; PETKIT says to soak it for at least 10 minutes and then reset the fountain. Both say it keeps carbon dust out of the water.

Why is my fountain pump noisy after a filter change?

A new filter does not fix a dirty pump. Catit says to take its pump apart every two weeks, and PETKIT says a dirty pump causes weak flow and noise; low water makes most pumps louder too.

Do fountain filters help with urinary problems?

No maker shows evidence for that on its filter page, and Cornell says only that some cats drink more from fountains. If your cat has a urinary problem, ask your vet how to get more water into it.
