Quick answer

For an indoor cat that likes to curl up, the K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed is the heated pick: a 4-watt heater that warms only when your cat is in it, with a removable heater and washable cover. If you'd rather not plug anything in, the K&H Self-Warming Pad reflects your pet's own body heat. For a garage or porch, K&H's Lectro-Soft has a steel-wrapped cord.

When the house cools down, the warmest spot you can give a cat or small dog is a bed that holds heat. There are two kinds: heated beds that plug in, and self-warming beds that reflect your pet's own body heat. For an indoor cat, the K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed is the plug-in pick, because its 4-watt heater only warms up when your cat is in it. If you'd rather not have a cord, the K&H Self-Warming Pad costs a fraction of the price.

We haven't tested these beds. We compared them on their Amazon listings, checked through Amazon's product API on publication day; every one is sold by Amazon.

How we chose

We started with K&H, which makes most of the heated pet beds sold on Amazon and lists wattage, thermostat behaviour and cord details for each. We picked one heated bed, one heated mat and one outdoor bed, then two self-warming pads and a self-warming round bed for homes where a cord is a bad idea. We left out human heating pads, which aren't designed for pets to lie on unattended, and anything without a stated thermostat.

Heated or self-warming?

Heated (plug-in) Self-warming
How it warms Low-wattage heater with a thermostat Reflects your pet's body heat
Best for Senior, thin-coated or outdoor pets; cold rooms Most healthy pets in a heated house
Cord Yes None
Pets that chew Not recommended Fine
Washing Remove the heater first Machine washable

Older pets and thin-coated breeds often benefit most from extra heat. If your pet has arthritis or is losing weight, mention it to your vet; a warm bed helps comfort but doesn't replace treatment.

The six beds

1. K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed: best heated bed for indoor cats

A cup-shaped bed with 6-inch foam walls and a 4-watt heater controlled by a thermostat. K&H says it warms only when your cat is inside and otherwise stays at or just above room temperature, so don't judge it by touching an empty bed. The heater comes out for summer, and the cover is machine washable. The small 16-inch size is for pets under 15 lb; the 20-inch is for heavier cats.

Buy it if your cat sleeps curled up. Skip it if your cat chews cords.

2. K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat: best for an existing favourite spot

The same pet-activated idea in a flat 25 x 12.5 inch reversible mat. K&H says it warms to about 102°F when your cat lies on it. Put it on the sofa, a window perch or inside a bed your cat already uses. The 6-watt heater is removable for washing.

Buy it if your cat already has a spot and you want to warm it. Skip it if your cat likes walls around it.

3. K&H Lectro-Soft Outdoor Bed: best for a garage or porch

Built for sheltered outdoor spaces like a garage, shed or barn: waterproof, with orthopedic foam, a fleece cover and a 5.5-foot steel-wrapped cord. The thermostat warms the surface to a pet's normal body temperature when it's in use. Even with the steel wrap, K&H says it is not recommended for pets that chew.

Buy it if you have outdoor or barn cats, or a dog that sleeps in the garage. Skip it if your pet chews.

The ASPCA's view is that if it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pet: keep pets inside when you can, with a warm bed off the floor and away from drafts.

Kittens and cord-chewers are the case for a self-warming pad with nothing to plug in.

4. K&H Self-Warming Pad: best with no cord

No electricity: the plush material captures your pet's body heat and reflects it back. It's reversible, machine washable and fits on furniture or inside a bed or crate. K&H notes a slight crinkle sound that most cats like and noise-sensitive cats may not.

Buy it if you want warmth with no cord in reach. Skip it if your cat startles at crinkly sounds.

5. K&H Self-Warming Crate Pad: best for dog crates

The same self-warming material in a 25 x 37 inch crate pad, with corner slits to fit and a non-slip bottom. It's thin, so an older dog may need it on top of an orthopedic bed.

Buy it if your dog sleeps in a crate in a cool room. Skip it if your dog needs joint support; see our orthopedic dog beds.

6. Petmate Aspen Self-Warming Round Bed: best for burrowers

A round faux-lambswool bed with plush sides and a Mylar layer inside that reflects body heat, per Petmate. The sleeping area is 16 x 16 inches, so it fits cats and small dogs.

Buy it if your pet likes to burrow. Skip it if your dog is medium-sized or larger.

Using a heated bed safely

  • Run the cord where your pet can't chew it, and use heated beds only with pets that leave cords alone.
  • Indoor beds stay indoors. The Thermo-Kitty products are for indoor household use only, per K&H.
  • Give your pet a way off the heat. Put the bed where your pet can move to a cooler spot.
  • Take the heater out before washing, and check the cord for damage when you put it back.
  • Puppies, kittens and pets that can't move easily should be supervised on any heated surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are heated pet beds safe to leave on?

K&H designs its beds to stay plugged in: a low-wattage heater and a thermostat that warms only when a pet is using the bed. Follow the maker's instructions, keep cords away from pets that chew, and give your pet a cooler spot to move to.

Why doesn't my heated cat bed feel warm?

K&H's pet-activated beds stay at or just above room temperature when empty and warm up when your pet lies on them. K&H explains how to test this in the listing; touching the empty bed isn't a reliable check.

Do self-warming beds really work?

They don't make heat; they reflect your pet's own body heat back. In a heated house that's usually enough for a healthy pet. For a senior, thin-coated or outdoor pet in a cold space, a heated bed adds more warmth.

Can I use a human heating pad for my pet?

Pet beds are designed for pets lying on them unattended, with low wattage and a thermostat. Use a bed made for pets rather than a human heating pad, and follow its instructions.

Do cats need a heated bed in winter?

Not all cats. Indoor cats in a warm house often do fine with a self-warming pad. Senior cats, thin or hairless breeds, and cats in a cold room or garage are the ones most likely to use a heated bed.

The Bottom Line

Indoors, buy the K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed for a cat that curls up, or the Thermo-Kitty Mat for a spot it already loves. For a garage or porch, the Lectro-Soft. No cord wanted? The K&H Self-Warming Pad, or the crate pad for a dog.
