Dog Cooling Mats (2026): Gel, Water and Elevated Cots, and What Heatstroke Looks Like

For a dog that runs hot, the simplest thing to buy is an elevated mesh cot: the Coolaroo Original for most dogs, or the K9 Ballistics cot for a chewer. For a dog that wants to lie flat on something cool, the K&H Cool Bed III is filled with water rather than gel, and the Arf Pets pad is a solid-gel mat for a big dog that doesn't chew. This guide compares six cooling beds and mats, quotes each maker's chewing and care warnings, and sets out the heatstroke signs from the ASPCA and AVMA, because no mat treats heatstroke.

First: what heatstroke looks like

A cooling mat makes a warm day more comfortable. It is not first aid, and a dog showing signs of heatstroke needs a vet, not a mat.

The ASPCA's hot weather safety tips list the symptoms of overheating as "excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse," and add that they "can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees."

The AVMA's warm weather pet safety page lists these signs of heat stress and says to "seek emergency veterinary care if you observe any of these signs":

• Anxiousness
• Excessive panting
• Restlessness
• Excessive drooling
• Unsteadiness
• Abnormal gum and tongue color
• Collapse

Some dogs are at higher risk. The ASPCA says "animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively," and that these pets, "along with the elderly, the overweight and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible." The AVMA adds that overweight pets and short-nosed breeds face higher risk with warm-weather exercise.

Elevated cots: the simplest way to cool a dog

An elevated cot is a sheet of mesh or fabric stretched over a frame a few inches off the ground. It lifts the dog off hot pavement, a sun-warmed deck or a floor with no airflow, and lets air move underneath. There is no gel or water inside to leak.

The Coolaroo Original is the classic: breathable HDPE fabric on a raised frame, which Coolaroo says "promotes continuous 360-degree airflow to help prevent hot spots." You hose it off or wipe it clean. The Coolaroo Pro sits lower (6.3 in) on an alloy steel frame rated for pets up to 100 lb, and Coolaroo says its HeatShield fabric "reflects infrared heat to feel up to 15°F cooler." Treat that number as the maker's claim; we found no independent test of it.

The K9 Ballistics cot is built for dogs that destroy beds. Its aluminum frame covers the corners, where most chewers start, and the sling is 1200D ripstop fabric. K9 Ballistics sizes its cots to fit inside standard wire crates (the Medium fits a 36 x 23 in crate) and says to leave "at least a quarter inch of wiggle room" between frame and crate wall. It calls the bed "chew proof" and rates it 9/10 for chewing on its own site. That is the maker's rating, not a standard.

Gel mats and chewing

Pressure-activated gel mats are the ones most people picture: a flat pad filled with gel that feels cool when the dog lies on it and "recharges" when the dog gets up. Arf Pets says its solid-gel mat cools "for up to 3 hours" and recharges "after 15 minutes of nonuse," and that it is "made from 100% non-toxic materials." Those are the maker's words.

The concern with gel is chewing. The Green Pet Shop, which makes the Cool Pet Pad, is unusually direct on its product page: "This product is not meant for consumption. While the gel is non-toxic, we always recommend taking your pet to the veterinarian if they ingest any part of the Cool Pet Pad." It adds: "If your pet is prone to chewing or excessive scratching, DO NOT leave it unattended with the Cool Pet Pad."

We would apply that warning to every gel mat. If your dog chews bedding, choose a cot or a water mat instead, and if your dog does swallow part of any mat, call your vet. The Cool Pet Pad itself didn't make our list only because its Amazon listings were sold by a storefront that wasn't The Green Pet Shop. We also looked for Chillz, which The Green Pet Shop mentions as another gel mat, but the Chillz products on Amazon were ice sheets for coolers, not pet mats.

Water-filled and cool-fabric mats

The K&H Cool Bed III is a flat bladder you fill with water. K&H says it uses "no electricity and contains no toxic gels" and "wicks heat out of your pet and releases it into the air." The catch is weight: K&H says the Large "weighs 33-50 lbs when filled," so place it where it will stay before you fill it, and keep it in the shade. K&H says it is not meant to be moved often.

The Bedsure ArcticMax is a fabric mat with no gel or water. It feels cool to the touch, and Bedsure is candid that "the mat is not an active cooler; prolonged lying may cause slight warming as it absorbs body heat." It machine washes, which makes it the easy choice for a crate or the back seat.

Using any cooling bed well

The makers' own instructions overlap with the AVMA's and ASPCA's general advice:

• Shade and water first. The AVMA says pets need "unlimited access to fresh water, and access to shade when outside." Our portable dog water bottle guide covers bottles for walks.
• Give the dog a choice. The AVMA suggests "different temperature zones within your house," so a cooling mat works best next to a regular bed, not instead of it. An anxious dog may still prefer a bolstered bed like those in our calming dog bed guide.
• Walk at cooler times. The AVMA says to walk during the cooler hours and avoid hot surfaces such as asphalt that can burn paws; the ASPCA adds, "Don't let dogs linger on hot asphalt." Our dog boot guide covers paw protection.
• Never the car. The AVMA says: "Never leave a pet in the car, even in the shade or with windows cracked." A cooling mat on a car seat changes nothing about that.
• Don't shave the coat. The ASPCA says you can trim longer hair but "never shave your dog," because the coat layers protect against overheating and sunburn.

Which one to buy

• Most dogs: Coolaroo Original.
• A big or older dog that finds a tall cot awkward: Coolaroo Pro.
• A chewer: K9 Ballistics cot. Skip gel mats.
• A dog that wants to lie flat on something cool: K&H Cool Bed III (water), or the Arf Pets gel pad if the dog doesn't chew.
• A crate or car seat you want to wash: Bedsure ArcticMax.

We found no FDA or CPSC recall for any brand on this page in the CPSC recall database or on our pet product recall page. Coleman-branded gel mats and several unbranded water mats were sold by storefronts whose names did not match the brand, so we left them out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cooling mats work for dogs?

They give a dog a cooler place to lie; they are not a treatment for overheating. Bedsure says plainly that its fabric mat "is not an active cooler," and elevated cots work by letting air move under the dog.

Is the gel in cooling mats toxic?

Makers such as Arf Pets and The Green Pet Shop say their gel is non-toxic, but The Green Pet Shop still says to take your pet to the vet if it eats any part of the pad. Don't leave a chewer alone with a gel mat.

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?

The ASPCA lists excessive panting or difficulty breathing, drooling, weakness, stupor, collapse, seizures, vomiting and a temperature over 104 degrees. The AVMA says any sign of heat stress, including anxiousness, unsteadiness or abnormal gum color, means emergency veterinary care.

Can I leave a cooling mat outside?

Cots and the K&H water bed are made for indoor and outdoor use. K&H says to keep its bed in the shade, and every source here says the dog needs shade and fresh water too.
