Quick answer

For one bedroom or a small living room, the LEVOIT Core 300-P is the one most shoppers buy: an AHAM-verified smoke CADR of 143, enough for about 220 square feet by the EPA's chart. Step up to the Winix 5510 or the Coway Mighty for open-plan rooms, and pick a LEVOIT Vital model if you want a pet mode and a washable pre-filter. None of them cleans up the source of an odor; that's still an enzyme cleaner's job.

Buy the LEVOIT Core 300-P for a bedroom or a small living room, and a bigger machine like the Winix 5510 or the Coway Mighty for an open-plan space. Then size it properly: what matters is the clean air delivery rate (CADR) for your room, not the largest square footage printed on the box.

An air purifier is a supplement, not a fix. The EPA says the most effective ways to improve indoor air are to remove the source and ventilate, with filtration as a helpful addition. With pets, that means brushing and vacuuming the hair, washing bedding, and treating accidents with an enzyme cleaner. A purifier deals with what's left floating in the air.

How we chose

We started with the purifiers pet owners buy most on Amazon; the LEVOIT Core 300-P was on Amazon's list of creator top sellers for Prime Big Deal Days in October 2026. We kept models sold by Amazon itself, and noted where a listing leaves out a CADR, a room size or a carbon stage. Everything below is from the makers' listings, checked in October 2026, and the sizing follows the EPA's guide to air cleaners in the home. We haven't tested these purifiers ourselves.

Size it by CADR

CADR measures how much filtered air a purifier delivers at its highest speed. It is tested for smoke, dust and pollen, which stand in for small, medium and large particles. Pet dander is small, so the smoke number is the one to use. The EPA's sizing chart, for 8-foot ceilings:

Room area Minimum smoke CADR
100 sq ft 65
200 sq ft 130
300 sq ft 195
400 sq ft 260
500 sq ft 325
600 sq ft 390

That is about two-thirds of the floor area. With higher ceilings or an open floor plan, size up or use two units. The large figures on boxes ("up to 1,073 sq ft") usually mean one air change an hour, which is far less cleaning than the CADR rule assumes. LEVOIT's own listing puts the Core 300-P at 4.8 changes an hour in 222 sq ft and just one an hour at 1,073.

Measure the room you actually use, then size by CADR: an open living area like this one needs far more than a bedroom unit.

HEPA for dander, carbon for smell

HEPA filters catch particles: dander, dust, pollen and the hair that's still in the air. They do nothing for smells. Odors are gases, and in these purifiers only the activated carbon filter tackles them. The EPA notes that CADR covers particles only, and that carbon filters work best when there's a lot of carbon in them, the thicker the better. Most compact purifiers carry a thin carbon layer, so expect them to take the edge off litter-box or wet-dog smell rather than remove it.

A pre-filter matters more in a pet home than anywhere else. It catches hair before it reaches the HEPA filter, and a washable one (the Vital models, Winix and Coway all have one) can be rinsed instead of replaced.

The five purifiers

1. LEVOIT Core 300-P: best for a bedroom

The Core 300-P is AHAM Verifide with a CADR of 143 for smoke, 153 for dust and 167 for pollen. By the EPA chart, 143 covers a room of about 220 square feet.

LEVOIT quotes 24 dB in sleep mode, a display you can switch off and a timer, and lists it as CARB compliant. One detail to read closely: LEVOIT says its filter is "HEPA-grade" in sleep mode, which is a narrower claim than calling it a HEPA filter outright. It's the right size for the bedroom a cat or dog sleeps in.

2. LEVOIT Vital 100S-P: best for floating hair

The Vital 100S-P has the same room figures as the Core 300-P (4.8 changes an hour in 222 sq ft) and adds the features pet owners ask for: a Pet Mode, a wide U-shaped intake meant to catch fur, a washable pre-filter, an activated carbon filter for odors, and app scheduling. LEVOIT also sells a Pet Allergy replacement filter for it. Choose it over the Core 300-P if you want to rinse the pre-filter rather than vacuum hair off the main filter.

3. LEVOIT Vital Pet: best auto mode for odors

The Vital Pet adds an odor sensor to the usual PM2.5 sensor, so the fan speeds up when pet smells rise, not just dust. LEVOIT also lists a chew-resistant cable, which matters with puppies. The catch is that its listing bullets don't give a CADR or a room size. Check the box or LEVOIT's spec sheet against the chart above before you buy it for a large room.

4. Winix 5510: best for a large living room

The Winix 5510 is AHAM verified for a 392 sq ft room, which by the EPA chart is enough for most living rooms. Winix pairs a True HEPA filter with a carbon filter it describes as reducing pet and cooking odors, adds a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, and lists 23.5 dB on its slowest speed with a sleep mode that switches on when the room goes dark.

5. Coway Airmega Mighty: best for open-plan homes

The Coway Mighty is listed for up to 1,748 sq ft in 60 minutes, with a washable pre-filter, a deodorization filter and a HEPA filter, plus an air quality light, auto and eco modes, and a three-year warranty. One of its four stages is what Coway calls a "Bipolar Device," which the listing doesn't explain. The EPA advises avoiding air cleaners that intentionally make ozone, and points to the California Air Resources Board's list of certified air cleaners for devices tested to emit little or none. What an air purifier won't do

It won't pick up hair that has already landed. The EPA says filtration doesn't replace source control, and with pets the source is on the floor, the sofa and the dog. Use a pet hair remover and a deshedding brush for that.

It won't fix urine odor in a carpet. That smell is coming off the stain, and a purifier only catches what reaches it. Break down the stain with an enzyme cleaner, or lift it with a portable carpet cleaner.

It won't help if it's in the wrong place. The EPA suggests putting the unit in the room you use most, clear of curtains and furniture that block the airflow. Near the litter box or the pet's bed is a sensible spot, as long as nothing blocks the intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do air purifiers help with pet allergies?

They can help a little. The EPA says several studies of portable HEPA air cleaners have found improvements in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms, but not big improvements and not in every symptom. Keeping pets out of the bedroom and cleaning often still matter more. Ask your doctor about allergy treatment.

What size air purifier do I need for pet dander?

Use the smoke CADR and the EPA's chart: about 130 for a 200 sq ft room, 195 for 300 and 260 for 400, with 8-foot ceilings. Size up for high ceilings or open-plan rooms.

Do air purifiers remove pet odors?

Only the activated carbon filter does, and only for odors in the air. A thin carbon layer takes the edge off; it won't clear a smell coming from a stain. Clean the source with an enzyme cleaner.

Are ionizers and ozone air purifiers safe for pets?

The EPA advises avoiding air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, a lung irritant, and notes that some ionizers and plasma cleaners can emit it too. Check a model against CARB's certified list, which covers devices tested to emit little or no ozone.

How often should I change the filter with pets?

Follow the maker's schedule, and expect to change it sooner with a shedding pet. Rinse or vacuum the pre-filter every week or two so hair doesn't clog the HEPA filter behind it. The filter indicator on these models is a reminder, not a measurement.

The Bottom Line

For one room, the LEVOIT Core 300-P is the sensible default, and the Vital 100S-P is the same size with a pet mode and a washable pre-filter. For a big living area, buy the Winix 5510 or the Coway Mighty. Whatever you choose, size it with the smoke CADR, run it continuously in the room your pet uses, and keep brushing, vacuuming and treating accidents at the source.
